Ubuntu Server wifi Dell Latitude D630

  • run “ifconfig -a” to show all available networks

    • wlan0 did not show !!
  • to show wlan0 on dell latitude d630

      • $ lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
      • $ sudo iwlist wlan0 scan # scan available networks
      • $ sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
      • $ sudo poweroff
      • $ sudo modprobe -rv ssb_hcd b43 ssb
      • $ sudo modprobe -v b43
    • received this error that showed on the actual laptop screen, not the putty terminal
      • ERROR: Firmware file “b43/ucode5.fw” not found

            • $ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
              • edited file
            • $ sudo apt-get purge broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source bcmwl-kernel-source
            • $ sudo apt-get purge b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
            • $ sudo poweroff
            • $ sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
            • $ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
              • edited file
            • $ sudo poweroff
            • $ sudo nano /etc/modules
              • edited file
            • $ sudo poweroff
  • edit the “/etc/network/interfaces” file
